Connections: January 8

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAHooray for today!

Anniversary of me!

A wrinkly newborn

in 1943.

I came into a world

of war and ration

and still it seems

war is the fashion.

A birthday in January

makes perfect sense

it’s a two-headed time,

looking back and hence.

So I visit familiar faces

on my family wall

my genes, my leans, my rootings

perennial mysteries all.

I’d like to engage each one

in serious tete-a-tete

and ask my birthday question:

am I a grown-up yet?

Connections: September 21

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAStill

I stood with the happy dirt of the garden in my knuckles

noted the sky

marveled

at my singular place:

that lavish snowy dowager cloud

its raiment billowing winglike across the blue

was only that.

This was no explosion, no fire, no loss of home or life.

It was just a cloud.

Still

I stood and thought about that.

Why me?

Why am I so blessed? And what do I do about it?

On this International Day of Peace, I wish you, dear reader,

and me

a moment of peace

and insight into what we do with it.
