Lichens, they tell me,

aren’t bad for the tree

I have my doubts

they’re too creepy-crawly

with cold perspiration

bespangling its bark

poor tree seems so helpless

against winter’s dark

I know it wants to stretch

and scratch

but it’s stuck in place

and fungal thatch.
