June 22.23: Coping, but barely

I was never much of a reader. My misspent youth was at the piano. But sometimes there would be a Nancy Drew book in the summer, and the piano would wonder where I was. I was with Nancy and her chums, of course, in her roadster and wearing a frock!

Then my own chums and I would talk about the books.

That is my impressive background as a book reviewer. But a book review is an opinion, yes? And I do have a vast experience giving my opinions. Opinions, I find, are quite the fashion these days anyway.

I’ve followed Dan Antion’s blog for some time now. When Dan started to talk about the books he was writing, I followed along but didn’t see that they would be anything I’d be interested in. I rarely read fiction, let alone anything that might border on science fiction or fantasy. But the title of the first book was “Knuckleheads,” one of my favorite words. The hook was in.

This is my review of his trilogy: I have not done so much daytime reading since Nancy Drew! I am in a state of disbelief at how I was so unexpectedly, wholemindedly pulled into Dan’s story.

Yesterday I read the last word of the last book, slowly uncoiling from the tension of the final chapters, and then just sat, trying to remember what my daytime routine used to be.

I am sending Dan’s trilogy to my life-long friend Ann, in NY. How appropriate since she shared her Nancy Drew books with me so long ago. She is deep into “Knuckleheads” and her chum there is waiting impatiently for her turn with it.

A bonus: the pages in all three books have wonderful white space.

“Knuckleheads”

“The Evil You Choose”

“When Evil Chooses You”

With congratulations to Dan on his gifts as a storyteller!

Dan will be tickled pink, or perhaps some other color, by your review Maureen! I have such a pile of books waiting patiently for me to read them that I have not yet gotten Dan’s books. After reading your post I feel like I’m missing out on something great!

I believe that all of us who follow you know you to be truthful and not afraid to tell it like it is, so I highly respect your opinion. Your opinion of Dan’s trilogy makes me want to hurry up and read what I have!

Great post Maureen. I think you put a big, well-deserved smile on Dan’s face today.

If Dan is smiling, he deserves it. I sincerely mean it when I say that I was surprised at how I was pulled into his story. More often than not, I’ll start a book and quit after a few pages because my mind, such as it is, wanders. Not with Dan’s storytelling. I think he is very gifted. I realize that reading is very personal and our preferences are subjective, but I can certainly say for me that this was a reading treat. Thanks, Ginger!

All kinds of tickled, Ginger. This made my day/week/month. Big smile indeed.

Oh my goodness, Maureen. Not seeing this for an hour is what I get for trimming the forsythia. That’ll teach me. I am so glad you enjoyed these three books, and I am overjoyed that you shared this review on your blog and that you shared to books with others! When someone shares a book, I think it cements the fact that they enjoyed it. Thank you very much. My blog is overrun with doors today, but I am planning to reblog this tomorrow – Thanks again!

You’re welcome. It was deserved. You know my problems with story-telling, and I really was in awe of all the layers, twists and turns. My friend Ann, by the way, who has not yet finished “Knuckleheads,” pronounced it “a helluva story.” Those are her exact words.

Now, this is the way to enjoy my afternoon. Reading a review by a friend about a friend with a comment from another friend. I’m loving it. Dan is a good writer, and he deserves all the praise that people have given his books. Writing a book is exciting but multiples is beyond my thought process. I raise my glass of iced coffee to the writer and the reviewer.

Thanks, Judy! I love the way you put it — yes, there is something very enjoyable about this feeling that we are kind of knowing each other and feeling as though we are bumping into good friends in our blogs. I’m with you on the matter of writing multiple books. ONE would be daunting! And to spin a story through three is completely unthinkable. Wow.

    • Dan Antion's avatar

Thanks Judy. It does feel like I just bumped into some friends.

This is a marvelous post, Maureen. I was a Nancy Drew reader when I was young too, and that particular title always stood out to me.
It’s wonderful to see Dan’s books here. Thanks for posting this lovely review. Hugs.

Well done, Dan! (A wonderful and enticing review, Maureen!)

Reblogged this on No Facilities and commented:
Yesterday, while I was sorting through doors from around the globe, Maureen at Oddments surprised me with a review of the Dreamer’s Alliance Series. I knew she had read the first book in the series, and I knew she was reading the second book. To hear her explain how she finished the series and how she felt about reading it was something heartwarming and very, very special.

    I can’t thank her enough.

Maureen, Nancy Drew and her chums (and Ned, too!) were such a big part of my growing up. Weaving them into a book review of Dan’s book is wonderful. And then passing along a great review to the author and a great book to friend–that’s the way to do it!
I love that you were so surprised, Dan. This is such a ‘feel good’ post. Happy weekend to both of you!

I love the honesty of this post. When any of our books draw in someone who isn’t an avid reader, it’s the biggest accolade an author can receive. Congratulations to you, Dan, on this fabulous testimony!

How great was this review? I’ll tell you how much… Now I want to read the trilogy… And I felt as you did, Maureen – thinking not too much my genre. Ahhh… I so miss my Nancy Drew days!

Your piano is playing a happy tune and agrees with your review, Maureen! What a wonderful review with an endorsement from a friend. It sounds like a book club. Congratulations to Dan!

Maureen, what an outstanding review you’ve given our mutual friend, Dan. I have all 3 books on my list, but haven’t had time to read lately. (personal reasons I won’t bore you with).
Dan, with friends like Oddment giving reviews, you won’t need any publicity. Word-of-mouth will take over!

A terrific review, Maureen. Congratulations to Dan.

Such a fantastic trilogy, I definitely agree with you Maureen . I have been spell bound by all three books I am due to write a review soon. I shall enjoy that hopefully I can return some of the pleasure I got from reading them.
By the way I loved your post 💜💜

I love how your review draws a reading parallel with Nancy Drew! A huge congratulations to Dan!

Terrific review, Maureen. I’m an avid reader of just about any genre (no piano playing for me when I was young – or at any time), and I enjoyed the first two of Dan’s series. You review has reminded me that I need to get to the third one soon!

    • Oddment's avatar

Thanks, Janis! You probably have read a zillion more books than I have; I will never catch up after all those years at the keyboard. And, yes, you need to get Dan’s third book! It had me in its grips in no time — much like the piano, as a matter of fact!

    • Dan Antion's avatar

Thanks Janis. I didn’t have music lessons either, so reading and writing were always a thing for me.

I almost feel bad mentioning that the previously unplanned 4th (and final) book in this series will be released in September. Thanks again for the review.

Hi Maureen – I’ve been ‘putting off’ getting Dan’s books – so I have time to read them … such is life. They are on my list and I will get there soon – I’m so pleased to read your review here … great and congratulations to Dan for publishing: I’ll be a fan soon! Cheers Hilary

This is such an amazing review. Congratulations to Dan. I’m not into fantasy and sci-fi stories, too. That’s the line that got me. I got all 3 of Dan’s book just before I read this review because I like his writing but I was still uncertain if I’d be able to do his books justice. This review makes me dive right into them. Thank you for saying it as it is, Maureen.

    • Oddment's avatar

I hope you’re as surprised as I was. At first I ordered just “Knuckleheads” because I was skeptical. I wasn’t at all sure I’d be interested. It didn’t take long to realize that I was VERY interested!

      • Smitha V's avatar

I hope so, too, Maureen. I just read the prologue. If the rest of the book continues in the same way, I’m sure to like it. ‘Skeptical’ is exactly how I had been feeling.

      • Dan Antion's avatar

I’m glad you gave it a chance, Maureen. I understand skeptical, but I appreciate your willingness to read and I love this review.

    • Dan Antion's avatar

Oh, Smitha, I hope you enjoy them. I had a great deal of trouble putting them into one of Amazon’s categories. More than anything (I think) they are stories about people.
