Stemmed swan,
wings of snow,
winter daydream’s
furbelow.
With thanks to my dear friend Donna for the elegance of this white amaryllis,
which has bloomed manically and isn’t done yet.

There is nothing that makes a gardening heart soar in the dead of winter like a blooming amaryllis. It provides entertainment for weeks as it takes root, makes buds, and then blooms and blooms. It is winter magic.

“Winter magic” is a very good way to describe it. The garden that shouldn’t be. Just on the other side of its window is a cold, drab world, but you’d never know it to see the bloom.

I had to look up furbelow. What a beautiful gift from Donna. Flowers (and crinkles) well worth dreaming over.

That they are! A ruffle on the winter day, and a beautiful gift indeed.
