May 4.21: Coping

Kirk had it wrong;

that Final Frontier

isn’t some star —

it’s much more near.

It’s when you decide

you’re going to paint

and are sharply reminded

that young you ain’t.

This job designed

by Beelzebub

requires my head

between toilet and tub.

I used to could bend —

that’s historical fact —

but now I can’t seem

to be so compact.

My hips both object,

my knees ping and crack,

that creaking sound

is my lower back.

This be my swan song,

I won’t try this again;

I’ll adjust my horizons

to more accommodable yen.

I’ll hope to complete

and finish it nicely,

then I’ll turn in my brush

and hang out at Mos Eisley.

May the 4th be with you, dear reader!

And, yes, I’ve mixed Star Wars with Star Trek. Maybe poetic license is the REAL final frontier. I should have thrown in a Captain Video secret decoder ring.

  1. ‘Used to could’ would have had me thrown did my sweetheart not sometimes say it. Just promise to make sure we do not have a poem about a bruise in the next few days. Your May the 4th made me groan. I had almost got through the day without realising.

    • Well, obviously I got to you just in time! It would never do for you to miss May the 4th. “Used to could” is one of several kinds of constructs that I think I picked up from my Grandpa Mauck, who grew up in the hills of North Carolina. I was not quite 11 when he died, but he had already taught me valuable things, as you can see.

  2. Oh, can I relate to this since I’m sitting with ice packs after pruning some raspberry bushes. Yep, those joints just don’t move and bend like they use to. I hope you can reach in there, get it really good, and never have to do it again. 🙂 I painted two small table tops today, but I was able to do those sitting down. 🙂

    • My joints send sympathies to your joints! This is the pits! I’m used to muscles yelling at me, especially as gardening season starts, but this thing with joints is something I am not quite used to yet. I don’t approve of it at all! I’m thinking ice also but more along the lines of something on the rocks. I tried hard to finish today but I don’t think I’ll make it. But then that’s why God gave us tomorrow, yes?

  3. That is one of the hardest places in the house to paint. I think putting the tape in place is even harder than painting.
