Death sets a table
for Loneliness,
snuffs the light of expecting,
feasts on emptiness.
And yet
the planting
defiant
makes the earth take seed.
We must think of both.

The first time I read this, I was concerned you had lost someone, and then I realized it was in remembrance of 9/11. I think everyone who lived through that can vividly remember right where they were at that moment and what they were doing. May we never live through that again, and prayers to all those who lost someone and whose lives were never the same.

Oh, yes. It was one of those moments that remain with us forever. As to your prayer that it never happen again, AMEN! Probably those who lost loved ones that day and those who were nearby live with it every day still.

Thanks. I agree that 9/11 marked a change. One would have thought our species couldn’t have grown any bloodier but perhaps it has.

It doesn’t matter where we are in the world, 9/11 brings the daily rush to a stop. It’s an annual reminder of the existential fragility that we all have in common.

You are so right, Shirah: our common bond is our fragile existence. Today does make us face that — I wish I knew if it made a difference.
