in water’s glass
call and response
of muted brass
vesper choir
decrescendo’d
blazing fading
diminuendo’d
what has been
what’s to come
day or year
the pendulum.
More thanks to the S.W. Berg Photo Archives.

and what a show
mid-air chaotic
tumble and blow.
White-fisted fury
with wind a-roarin’
but when it was over
there wasn’t much more ‘an
a dustin’
bare crustin’
a whole lotta nothin’.
I have heard
who think that Jello
is table’s nerd
they wouldn’t have it
on their plate
its commonness
too profligate.
Their families haven’t
gathered ’round
to listen for
that Jello sound
a sign of
gastronomical luck
like foot pulled out of
deep deep muck.
There’s science and art
both delicate and tough
to make the mold
disgorge its stuff,
and nothing speaks
of drama unfolded
like cheering for
the jiggly unmolded.
So hoorar for the Jello
and family rite
may we hold to such memory
with good appetite.

yellowed Mary
piecemeal tableau:
my Grandma’s house
with flannel scrap
is bound to Now
in Time’s gift-wrap.
wrapping paper war is won
fevered shoppings cease
there seeps a certain peace
the real celebration
the season’s culmination
savoring “Silent Night”
with breakfast
by Christmas tree light.
With apologies to Shakespeare.
so great a brightness
in such simple corner
so vast a rightness
not just because it’s Christmas
Christmas comes and goes
but because it speaks of home
which warms the heart and toes.

now it’s the very last week
whether present or cookie
you just gotta peek.
when last you saw my tree
it was prostrate on the floor
Christmas gang agley.
The ruins have been salvaged
my firstborn saved the day
the tree is standing upright
with minimal crack and fray.
A festive touch, the Christmas twine
functional, albeit
a rarely-used adornment
please pretend that you don’t see it.
