a blushing leafy spree
the crimsons are grand
I can tell you firsthand —
if only they’d stay on the tree.
that their grey-green world
is edged in yellow-brown
that summer’s London Bridge
leaf by leaf
is falling down
that their rippled hideaway
will soon be roofed
by bare-boned arbor
so subdued they seem
gliding
soundless
to its shady harbor.
so I give this gift to you.
Now please excuse me while I seek
the tree on which it grew.

you have to move your eye —
it’s time to remember
that towards November
the garden moves nearer the sky.
stubborn heavy weight
faithful to its duty
going nowhere is its fate.
Yet nobility is there
clunky on the floor
steadfastness in purpose
jaunty esprit de corps.
In keeping that door open
it’s a kind of fighter
resisting subtle forces
not unlike a writer.
