Connections: January 11

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAAt end of bitter day

the wind blows black

staining

like berry ooze

the air.

Crystal-wrapped,

contorted, brittle,

a small tree

shivering

bows its

winter’d head,

bald and bare.

Beyond,

in waffling line,

yellowed

warmth of homelight

teases —

welcoming

warning

flare.

  1. The words you’ve chosen convey the feeling and imagery perfectly: the wind’s berry stain and the bald-headed, shivering tree. By the end, we are all searching for that homelight warmth. Well done!

  2. Thank you! Not a lot of imagination was needed for this: I think I was as cold as the tree. This is nonfiction poetry. But then maybe all poetry is nonfiction.
